Hamilton - Expectations Too High

My Mom came into Pittsburgh to see Hamilton with me this week at the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh. My siblings and myself gave her the ticket for her birthday this year.

This is Mom with her half priced happy hour wine in her collectable Hamilton glass.

Her were are with the obligatory Playbill picture post...

They have bumped up security (long time overdue, in my opinion) and they now have metal detectors and lines to enter the venue. All this said, you have to get there a lot earlier to get through the security lines. One tip: do not take a purse or a bag and there is an express lane. I just put my cards and ID in my coat pocket and we got right in.

They also mentioned in their email that security will now be at all Pittsburgh venues so make sure if you are attending anything in the Pittsburgh Cultural District, go early!

Onto Hamilton...

I enjoyed it but was slightly disappointed...I wanted to love it and be obsessed like everyone else but I was not.

It was entertaining...great story, great singing voices, dancing and acting but so are ALL of the other shows I have ever seen. I love musical Broadway and I have never seen a bad musical.

The show is all performed through singing...be is slow medleys or rapping so the time goes quickly but I was expecting SO MUCH MORE after all of the raving I have heard. Also, when the show went on sale (I already had tickets through my subscription) people waited for HOURS for tickets...I thought it would be the show of the century.

Hamilton did not stand out to me as the best thing ever like I have heard. I loved Cats, Phantom and Chicago...this was good but I would not even put it on my best list like everyone else.

I am really confused about what everyone is raving about to be perfectly honest...maybe it's true about expectations...if they are too high then they will never be met?

Have you seen it? What did you think? I am sooooo confused!! What is your favorite musical? Do you even like musicals?

  1. An Ann, I'm so sorry. I hate when that happens. The build up and then...eh!
I don't care for musicals much. I know I know you are cringing at that aren't you? I did see Chicago on Broadway and it was such fun but overall Hamilton is a musical therefore I wouldn't go. Do you think because this is the traveling show not the original Broadway gang who got the awards it could be different? Or do you think this is just the hype vs. the reality.
Either way I hope your mom enjoyed her show.
What a bummer, dinner and a show and neither were home runs!
    Next one for sure!

    1. I loved Book of Mormon! It was really good!! My friends and I do a lot of NY trips and see plays when we go...I have caught a lot of last minute tickets from the Tkts booth! Thanks for visiting!!!

  3. I have not seen Hamilton, but I'm guessing it's all the hype that surrounded it that made it so meh. A night out with Mom, at least!
A friend of mine saw it when it was in Denver and enjoyed it. But she got last-minute tickets in a roundabout way, long after it was sold out, so maybe she was still riding that wave.

  4. Wow, what interesting thoughts and if I saw it, I'd probably agree with you 100%. I set my expectations pretty high for Broadway Shows and I've heard so many rave reviews about Hamilton but, as I said, I'd probably agree with you. Thanks for stopping by today and your kind words. Yes, do enjoy your parents and their good health.

  5. Unfortunately, when there is a lot of hype over something (movie, play, concert) you can just about bet it will never really be THAT good. I've been disappointed too many times. I'm sorry for your let-down but it looks like a great time with your mom and memories were made for the two of you!! Nice!!

  6. What a lovely, young mother you have. And, how sweet to do something so fun with her. In response to your comment on my blog today, I think we are all guilty of taking for granted to special things right around us. I lived just minutes from one of the top tourist stops in our state and didn't see it. Shame on me. But, thanks for stopping by today and I enjoyed returning the visit.

  8. Dang! I'm sorry for the let-down. I, too, love live theatre -- the best, seeing Les Miz on Broadway. No particular reason, but I've no desire to see Hamilton.

  11. As someone who already loved American history, I found the Hamilton craze to be a little off-putting...like NOW you want to care about history?
My cousin saw it the same night you did (she also lives in town), so I'll have to ask her what she thought!

    1. Yes Kristin...I would definitely would love to hear what she thought! I am the opposite of you...not really into history at all but I heard you did not need to be to enjoy it. Can't wait to hear your sister's thoughts!

  12. Sorry to hear this. Everyone around here has raved about it. I am not a musical fan, so I might as well save my money. Here is something I posted since you are a football fan: https://csuhpat1.blogspot.com/2019/01/2019-college-football-national.html

  14. I'm a New Yorker and a Broadway baby, but I still have not seen Hamilton. I'm waiting until tickets become easier to obtain. I'm sure I will like it. But there are a lot of other shows that I wanted to see first. For me it's not about the hype, it's about the quality of the show.

    1. Agreed totally!!! The shows almost seem magical when you see them in NY!!! That is one of my favorite girlfriend trips - we all go stay in NY for shopping and a show!!! Have a great night!

  15. That a great tip about just taking the essentials into the show in your pocket. We are season subscribers here in Houston, and it would be much faster to go in without a purse. We saw Hamilton, and I liked it. Of course, my teens thought it was just the BEST. I thought it was really good, but like you I enjoy most musicals I go to see. HOpe you have a wonderful week!
