The Beetles Suck

Hi all!!!

Well, it is Thankful Thursday!!!

Today I am joining Rebecca Jo and I am going to tell you what I am NOT thankful for!!!

I am SO stinking angry! I planted five basil plants and the dang japanese beetles ate EVERY ONE them! They chomped on all the leaves and left this icky black stuff all over ALL the plants! They were so destroyed I have to rip them all out! I am so angry!!

They are SO super gross!!

There is nothing I love more than fresh basil to enjoy throughout the summer! UGH!

I purchased a bug bag on Amazon and I plan to run my the plant store to see if anyone has basil plants left to purchase.

I will hang my beetle bag and re-plant hoping the beetles will leave them alone and get stuck in the beetle bag.

Anyone out there in blog land have tips for me!?!? Obviously I cannot spray anything since I eat the basil...please help!

Thanks in advance for any tips you have on keeping Japanese beetles away!?!?!?!

And...in closing...I am thankful for all of you, my family, friends, my pets, my home and never having to struggle to  find something to eat. Basically thankful for EVERYTHING in my life today EXCEPT the stinkin' beetles!

HELP!

  4. Yuck on the beetles! Sorry they ate your basil! A friend of mine has planted geraniums nearby her herbs. They are attracted to the geraniums which has something in the blossoms that make the beetles dizzy and drop off so you can sweep them away.

    Thankful for many things today!

  6. Make sure to hang your bag away from your plants. You want to draw the beetles away, not toward them. We don't have a lot of beetles this year but I just saw something is starting on my pepper plants. Going to have to do something about that...and just when they are starting to get blossoms!

  11. Get a kind of big spray bottle and a bar of Ivory soap.

Or you could get a pressurized sprayer if you have a lot of plants especially roses but you'll need more Ivory soap.

Make certain to get Ivory. Vegetables do not need deodorant protection.

Cut the soap into pieces. Put them in the spray bottle. Add water.

Might want to give it a day for the soap to dissolve.

    Spray the plants.

I think your bagging the basil in mesh as you suggested and then spraying nearby plants is a better idea so "collateral damage" is avoided.

And always wash vegetables and fruits. One time there were deer in the yard trying to get apples from the tree. They'd eaten all of the low-hanging apples so couldn't quite reach. Kind of like bobbing for apples at Halloween.

    Mmmm. Deer spit. Yummy.

Also, are there different bug-resistant basil? Is basil one of those things that can be planted with whatever it is that insects avoid? (Lemongrass?) For synergistic effect?

    Good luck, pal.

    1. I tried planting the new ones next to a geranium as beetles do not like them...so far, not looking very hopeful :-(
